I want to explain something here. These two .gifs are the first flash animations that I had ever made. I did these during my first semester in college in a computer animation class back in 2010. I had no idea what Flash even was.

Now let me just ask you something: Which one looks like it took the most time?

Our assignment was to experiment with Flash on our own, get used to the tools and settings and that sort of thing. I decided to go frame by frame and observed a gif taken from Treasure Planet. The result was that first gif you see up there.

I turned that first gif in to class the next day…and got a failing grade.

“This is not the proper way to use Flash” my teacher said. “Too complicated. This is not what people want to see. No use of tweens. Zero points.”

I was heartbroken to get a zero on my first assignment, so my teacher decided to give me a second chance. “Animate a running stick figure with tweens” the teacher said. So I did. I turned in that 2nd gif you see, and got an A.

To this day I am appalled by the way I was treated. To all of you animators out there, I recommend learning on your own. It could save you time and money. If you still choose to go to college, then that is fine too. You do what you want, just don’t let ANYONE try to downgrade your creative capability.

So remember how I made that post about my brother? This is a good friend of mine, who goes to the same exact school, mind, giving a bit of insight into her own college experience. I recognize not all universities are like this, but the fact of the matter is, that a lot of places out there don’t actually focus on building a program that benefits the student. It’s about teaching a curriculum that meets certain standards and observes certain rules without recognizing individual needs and methods of learning.

People learn differently - at their own pace, in their own way, through different sorts of practice. You can benefit from what’s taught in a classroom for only so long. So all of you students out there - computer science, animation, theatre, whatever it is you’re studying… Remember that no matter what you’re studying, that is not what you are learning. What you learn is what you experience and teach yourself. You can be given a book, told to read it, and take a quiz on that information, but it isn’t until you start asking questions and applying logic and thought to what you’ve read that you start to comprehend and learn it.

Most universities, from what I’ve gathered, anyway, don’t actually teach you that part of the process. They just expect you to know it, but when you spend around 13 years (assuming you go by the American public education system and didn’t skip any grades) being told that “learning” is knowing enough to score well on standardized testing, it’s easy to see where the majority of students out there fail to start thinking comprehensively and for themselves.

And just before all you politically correct Dumblr-fucks get on my ass. There are schools and universities out there that really do care about and teach their students. There are fantastic teachers in existence. This is a generalization mainly pointing out the flaws in our academic system. Critical thinking, hands-on learning, and real experience are undervalued in a lot of educational institutions today, and this is really, really frustrating.

The amount of work that Ciara put into one simple flash animation was regarded as not just a “failure” but was worth, in her teacher’s eyes, “zero points.” Ciara, who even if she weren’t a great artist who’s been practicing her craft for years, was creative and took a frame-by-frame animation and recreated it in Flash (with a mouse, not a tablet, if I remember correctly.) Yet her teacher regarded it as worthless, as “too complicated” and “not what people want to see.” If you can’t see the error in that, you need to rethink your life a bit.

That’s not transphobic, though. He’s making a point that because the LGBT agenda is “barreling forward at full-speed” that the B and T of LGBT is being left behind. Everyone is focusing on the L and the G that there are people who have no idea what the B and T even stand for. He’s not being transphobic or making a slight meant to make fun of or harm the bi and trans* community. He’s making a point that no one is focusing on them because they’re focusing on the lesbian and gay community.

Mother. Fucking. This.

People really need to realize that EVERYTHING Colbert says while on camera is satire.

Satire: The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the cotext of a play, novel, fiilm or other works.

He is not making a transphobic joke. He is not honestly saying that bi and trans people do not count/matter/exist. He is making humor in order to shed light on the fact that they are forgotten.

He is doing this to raise fucking awareness that there is more to LGBT than LG. He is raising a big flag that says “Hey, don’t forget about these guys. They count. They matter. Why aren’t you doing anything about them? Why aren’t they discussed?” He is not trying to say “They don’t matter.”

So please stop with the self righteous, self pity, “social justice” comments unless you know what you are talking about.

I do appreciate that Bisexual is matched with bacon. I rather enjoy bacon.

This is why I love the Colbert Show.

Yeah, drawing attention to bi and trans erasure through satire is not in itself biphobic or transphobic.

I think the media really need to put less emphasis on the Woolwich murderers being ‘Islamic’ and more emphasis on them being ‘extremists,’ (alternatively, batshit insane cunts.) The media’s attitude is only encouraging the racism towards Muslims and as tragic as this situation is the last thing we need is a fucking riot on our hands.

Lead by example: Blame the sick fucks, not the religion they’re hiding behind.

I’m also disgusted by the attitudes of some of my fellow Scottish people. Regardless of your opinions on the army, the Queen, independence, whatever, a young man being murdered in the street is not something that should be celebrated!

Death in general is not something that should be celebrated.

That Will Smith’s character was actually supposed to brush off the whole thing, but Will’s father actually had left him when he was younger and he just fell apart on the set and the hug at the end was from one actor to another, not one character to another.

A Glasgow nightclub has installed a two-way mirror which allows male revellers in private booths to spy on unsuspecting women as they visit the toilet! With no notification or signage anywhere in the venue many female club goers have been left feeling embarrassed and used. Although they do briefly show the mirrors in a promo video, the club has been quickly deleting comments and posts on their social media from club goers trying to alert others to the situation. This is pretty much illegal and hugley violates privacy. Thank you The Shimmy Club for giving us a shiny, new, creative and cool take on objectification.

Here’s a handy bit of advice. The ‘Fingernail Test’ is actually flawed; it just shows the difference between first and second pane mirrors.

More accurately, to ascertain if the mirror is one or two way, trust the Mirropane people (the guys who make these mirrors).

A fake mirror will always be set into the wall like a window or a door, not hung. If you can slide a fingernail between the mirror and the wall, it’s almost certainly just a mirror. If it’s recessed, do the following:

Cup your hands around your face and peer into the mirror. Some light will seep into the other room and should be enough to illuminate just a little bit—which is enough to tell you that’s not your fucking reflection and you should GTFO.

Secondly, aural clues are your friend. A regular mirror, since it backs against a wall, will produce a dull thud when tapped, whereas an observation glass, sharing the same mechanics as an aquarium, will echo.
